Signs sprout where trees will take root along Temple Drive in Winter Park. The group hopes to raise $11 million during the next decade. First Tree Planting CeremonyWINTER PARK -- Saturday, January 22, 2005 at 11:00 a.m., the Winter Park Live Oak Fund and the City of Winter Park will hold a tree planting ceremony at the Winter Park Farmer’s Market. Winter Park Mayor Kenneth “Kip” Marchman and City Manager James Williams are scheduled to speak, and will be joined by Marc Hagle of the Winter Park Live Oak Fund. A large Live Oak tree will be placed into the ground at approximately 11:25 a.m. The Mayor, City Manager, and Mr. Hagle will be given shovels and each in turn will place a ceremonial shovelful of dirt around the tree base. A podium and microphone will be available, as well as two tables with literature about the Live Oak Fund. About the Live Oak Fund. The Winter Park Live Oak Fund was created by local citizens after the unprecedented 2004 hurricane season, to assist the City of Winter Park with the challenge of replacing more than 8,000 severely damaged and destroyed Laurel Oak and Water Oak trees along City streets with more wind-resistant and longer lifespan Live Oaks. About the City of Winter Park. Winter Park lies just minutes north of downtown Orlando, Florida and has a resident population of approximately 25,000. The city, founded during the late 1800s, is home to Rollins College, the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art, brick-paved streets, a chain of large spring-fed lakes, and Park Avenue—one of Florida’s most elegant and famous retail shopping districts. About the Farmer’s Market. The Winter Park Farmer’s Market building is a former railway freight depot. The 100-plus year old brick structure, which has been completely renovated, now houses antiques and historical exhibits and can be rented for special events. The Farmer’s Market is a Winter Park shopping tradition every Saturday morning from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., featuring fresh produce, baked goods, plants and foliage, crafts and more.
